The Art of Judo Combination Footwork

August 29, 2009 by khadaji Leave a Comment

One of the biggest problems that Judoka have with combinations – is the placement of the driver leg, ie; the leg that is still on the ground, and providing the most force for the throw.  Even if you have both feet on the ground, such as in a right sided Seoinage, both legs do not equally provide power, in this case, it would be the left leg which is the driver leg.

The most frequent mistake made by white belts, and indeed up through the ranks, is a poor placement of that driver leg.  For example, in a textbook Taiotoshi, a common combination is Taiotoshi – Ouchigari.  So when Uke steps over your blocking right leg, you simply turn from a forward Taiotoshi, to a backward Ouchigari.  The problem, of course, is that left leg of yours… In Taiotoshi, it’s generally (depending on exactly the direction of your throw) going to be placed in front of Uke’s left foot.  It should be accurately placed – for Ouchigari, about a foot or two over – nearly in front of Uke’s right foot – so you have an angle of attack that is to Uke’s left rear corner.

So how do you solve the problem?  With a hop… when your Taiotoshi is defended against by Uke stepping over – you hop to your right, then turn to face Uke while reaping his left leg.

A similar situation came up in last night’s class… we were working on Sasae Tsuri Komi Ashi – and I demonstrated how wonderful this throw is as a followup to Osotogari.  If you attack with Osotogari on the right side – Uke has several defenses possible – one is to step back the attacked leg – this allows a great entry into Ouchigari.  So some Judoka have taken to ‘jamming’ your attack, by pushing forward to stop you from getting deep enough for the Osotogari.  They will throw their right shoulder into you – stopping your attack… this however, sets you up very nicely for a left-sided Sasaetsurikomiashi… but here’s the trick, your driver leg will almost invariably be in the wrong place, so you must hop it over… but another critical point is where are your toes pointed?  If you attack in a textbook Osotogari, you’ll have your toes pointing directly forward (toward Uke’s back) – but the twisting to your right, which is critical for Sasaetsurikomiashi – will destroy your left knee if you don’t turn your toes to point toward Uke’s attacked left foot.

Try it and see… stand normally, then try to spin dramatically to your right on only your left leg… pop goes your knee joint.

So when you’re training with combination techniques, look at the requirements of each throw – the lead in throw will take care of itself most of the time – but the followup throw in many cases will need you to reposition your driver leg… and not just reposition it, but change the direction your foot is pointing.

Moving A Website To Drupal… 301 Redirects and 404 Pages.

August 27, 2009 by khadaji Leave a Comment

As some of you may have noticed, this site was moved this week from the old static pages, to a free content management system known as Drupal. Now, of course I didn’t want to lose the many backlinks I have coming to my old site – and the search engine listings I have from BestJudo are tremendous – but would all be going to the wrong location after I moved.  For example, the old location of my article on Shiro Saigo was www.bestjudo.com/article15.shtml – and if you type that old URL into your browser address tab – it will take you to the new location, which is: www.BestJudo.com/article/1233/shiro-saigo-judos-secret-weapon.  You’ll note that the name is a tad more descriptive of what the article is about.

How did I do this ‘magic trick’ of changing addresses ‘on the fly’?  It’s a simple .htaccess trick called a 301 redirect.  But the ordinary redirect doesn’t work under Drupal, as I found out… you have to change it.

The ordinary form looks like this:

Redirect 301 oldfilename.html http://www.yourwebsite.com/newfilename.html

This will not work under Drupal…  The form that you must use in your .htaccess file is this one:

RewriteRule article15.shtml /article/1233/shiro-saigo-judos-secret-weapon [R=301,L]

(Note that I gave you the exact one right out of my .htaccess file that redirects the Shiro Saigo article…)

Now, this is all well and good for ordinary webpages… such as all my Judo Book Reviews…  but I also had a WordPress blog on my old site – and I really didn’t want to add redirects for all those blog posts (there’s quite a few of them, sometimes as many as 15 in a month, and I had a few years of blog posts!), but I figured that the blog posts probably aren’t as heavily searched for, and I could safely skip doing this work…

I was wrong!  I started keeping a close watch on my log files when I switched the website over, and the first thing I noticed was a great deal of traffic coming from a Wikipedia link to a blog post I made on Kuzushi. Well, I really didn’t want to lose that traffic – so I quickly put in a redirect for that particular blog post… but then I kept seeing 404 ‘Page Not Found’ errors for all sorts of webpage blog posts… I really didn’t realize that my blog was so heavily linked in the search engines, and I certainly don’t want to lose any traffic!

So I went looking for a solution, and I found it.  Drupal has a module called the Search 404 module, which changes a ‘404 Page Not Found’ result into a search.  So if you end up coming to one of my blog posts via a link to the old site, chances are fairly good that it will link directly to the new blog post, or at least present you with a list of possible posts on my new BestJudo site that match what you were looking for.

It’s because of the raw power to do things like this that I wanted to move away from the static webpage design of the old site (and having been around since 2001 – in Internet terms, it’s antique!) and move into the power of modern CMS’s.  Drupal is just one of many great CMS ‘skeletons’ that you can use to form a website around… WordPress and Joomla are two of the more popular ones, but there are hundreds of them. So if you want to put up a website, check out any popular CMS, you don’t have to learn HTML and code it from scratch, like I originally did!

And if you want to move your site to Drupal, just be ready to put in a few redirects, and the Search 404 module, and you’ll keep the traffic you’ve built up!

Yes! I Have an Excuse…

March 20, 2007 by khadaji Leave a Comment

You haven’t been seeing very many posts recently – but yes, I do have an excuse.  I’m working on a new Judo website that when finished – will probably take the place of ‘BestJudo’.

Unfortunately, it will be at least another month or two before it’s ready to show the world – but when it’s ready – those who visit Best Judo will get the news before anyone else does.

Sorry to be so ’secretive’ – but in my experience, websites fail most often when they have little to no content prior to being released to the world … people come with high expectations, find little or no content, and write the website off.

So please remain patent… the new site is coming soon!

08/08/09 Update:  I can’t believe it’s been two years… my project was to create Judopedia.com – which would have been a Wikipedia for Judo… but the project got shelved, and never really made it off the blocks.

I’ve finally gotten BestJudo back on track, however – moved from the original handcoding – to an exceptionally good CMS framework – which has many new features, and can more easily be updated.  This new site also allows for much more participation from the visitors to this site.

08/21/09 Update – Got back from Judo class, and made the switch to the new Website. The DNS Name Servers will take up to 72 hours for everyone to move over to this site – but I’m already seeing the new site, and I already see people popping on – so it looks like I didn’t make any major errors during the changeover. I do hope everyone likes the new site – please feel free to create an account (all you need is an email address), and post comments.

Born in Missouri? The Argument Against Evolution

March 10, 2007 by khadaji Leave a Comment

Although I was born and raised in Southern California – I sometimes feel affinity for the “Show Me” state of Missouri.  I’ve often gone ‘against the grain’ of traditional thought – to examine issues myself – and I don’t always agree with the common consensus.  In Judo, for example – I argue against the traditional form of Osoto-Gari.  Those reading my blog here might well be familiar with that example.

Now, if I were ‘Trailer Trash’ from the Appalachians – with too much family inbreeding, people could rightfully dismiss me as a ‘crackpot’.  And indeed, some reading this will instantly dismiss the ideas presented here.  Evolution is one of those ‘hot-button’ topics upon which rational discussion is rarely possible. (Similar to the other two famous topics which everyone avoids – Sex and Politics)  But for those without closed minds – read on:

There are many battles going on currently concerning the “Theory of Evolution”, and it’s teaching in the educational system.  Many people, and quite honestly, primarily with a religious background – are trying to get a more balanced viewpoint of evolution into the schools.

Having been raised in a very traditional home – with church service and Bible study a deep part of my life – it seemed that the theory of Evolution was a worthwhile topic to dig into.  Particularly with my life-long interest in the fields of science, rather than the humanities.

Now – whenever I dig into any topic – I try to follow the same set procedure … one that our legal system is quite familiar with.  It’s called the ‘adversarial process’ – you have one person, the prosecutor; doing his best to convict, and another person, the defense attorney; doing his best to acquit.

If you don’t study both sides of an argument, you can’t imagine what you’re missing.

Unfortunately for those seeking the opposing arguments for evolution – far too many people with no real scientific background have jumped in, and based on not much more than their religious faith, have attempted to bash Darwin’s evolutionary theory.  This does far more harm than good – as someone like me, trying to find real arguments on both sides – end up with the ridiculous.  Poor and ignorant argumentative attacks on Evolution will not convince anyone with intelligence – they will merely impress those who are already predisposed (from a religious background) to disagree with Evolution

Before going much further – just what is the meaning of “evolution” as I’m discussing it?  Darwin’s original idea, like many great ideas, was elegantly simple.  He saw that there was a great deal of variation in all species – some larger, some faster, some smarter, and so forth… he reasoned that because food supplies are not unlimited, animals that some chance variation in abilities that gave them an advantage (perhaps simply to make use of a different food source) would also tend to allow them to survive and reproduce in higher numbers.  If this ‘chance variation’ in ability were inheritable, then in time the animals with superior advantages would crowd out the less advantaged animals, and over immeasurably long periods of time, this would lead to visible changes to the species. (The oft-cited ‘evolution’ of the horse can be brought to mind here.)

Another detail needs to be kept in mind – there are two forms of evolution – macro-evolution and micro-evolution.

Micro-evolution – the change *within* a species (example – a moth’s wings darken to match the new environment of a city)

Macro-evolution – the change of one species to another (Popular example [and vastly simplified] – from Monkey to Human)

There is no dispute about micro-evolution – it’s a biological fact, and is used in daily life all around us.  Many of the grocery store foods we buy, for example, are products of micro-evolution… tomatoes that resist disease, for example.  So please don’t confuse the two – they are not related.

One of the first interesting facts that I learned about Darwin’s Theory of Evolution was that those who would naturally be expected to endorse it – paleontologists – were the most vocal critics that Darwin had.  And although this isn’t taught in biology texts used in the U.S. educational system – the fossil record does not support evolution.  What should be common – transitional fossils – are simply non-existent.

As paleontologist Niles Eldredge describes the problem:

“No wonder paleontologists shied away from evolution for so long.  It never seems to happen.  Assiduous collecting up cliff faces yields zigzags, minor oscillations, and the very occasional slight accumulation of change – over millions of years, at a rate too slow to account for all the prodigious change that has occurred in evolutionary history.  When we do see the introduction of evolutionary novelty, it usually shows up with a bang, and often with no firm evidence that the fossils did not evolve elsewhere!  Evolution cannot forever be going on somewhere else.  Yet that’s how the fossil record has struck many a forlorn paleontologist looking to learn something about evolution.”

In Darwin’s day – it could be assumed that as paleontologists continued to dig up new fossils – the proof that Darwin was waiting for would eventually surface.  This was certainly a reasonable thought – and must have comforted Darwin – who was certainly aware of the problems that the fossil record posed for his theory.

In science, one of the most critical factors that differentiate it from religion is a test of ‘falsifiability’.  This simply means – is there a way to prove the theory untrue?

The belief in God is not falsifiable – there’s simply no argument or evidence that could be presented that would demonstrate that God doesn’t exist.  So a belief in God cannot be in the realm of science, and must remain in the realm of religion – which is rightfully concerned with matters of faith.  (This is not to be taken as an assertion that matters of faith cannot be true!)

On the other hand, Einstein’s theory of gravitation clearly satisfied the criterion of falsifiability. Even if, at the time Einstein proposed his theory – the means of testing it had to wait until technology could catch up – it was theoretically possible to prove Einstein’s theory wrong.

So what is the “falsifiable” test of Evolutionary theory?  Darwin himself provided it: “If it could be demonstrated that any complex organ existed which could not possibly have been formed by numerous, successive, slight modifications, my theory would absolutely break down.”

And unfortunately in our educational system – you won’t learn this – but Darwin’s test of his theory has been falsified.

Stay tuned to part two to learn how…

Born In Missouri? The Argument Against Evolution – Part 2

March 10, 2007 by khadaji Leave a Comment

“If it could be demonstrated that any complex organ existed which could not possibly have been formed by numerous, successive, slight modifications, my theory would absolutely break down.” – Darwin

What would constitute an organ, or a biological system; that could not be formed by “numerous, successive, slight modifications?” As Michael Behe points out in his book “Darwin’s Black Box” – a biological system that is ‘irreducibly complex’.

This term, ‘irreducibly complex’, needs to be well understood – as an example that Behe uses, think about the common ordinary mousetrap. If you examine the physical components of a mousetrap, you will find the following typical components:

1. A Flat Wooden Platform that acts as a base, and holds all the rest of the components.
2. A Metal Hammer, which does the actual job of squishing the poor little mouse.
3. A Spring, which gives the hammer the power to do the squishing.
4. A Catch – which holds the ‘Holding Bar’ until a mouse trips it.
5. A Holding Bar, which prevents the Metal Hammer from squishing air.
6. Assorted staples that hold everything together.

Now, subtract ANY ONE of those above listed 6 items, and your mousetrap will NOT squish mice. And this isn’t the only problem… If the base were made out of paper, for example, the trap would fall apart. If the hammer were too heavy, it would break the spring. If the spring were too loose, it would not move the hammer. If the holding bar were too short, it would not reach the catch. If the catch were too large it would not release at the proper time.

So could a mousetrap ‘evolve’ from the garbage in your garage? Even given millions of years – one can easily see that evolution could not explain a mousetrap. It is irreducibly complex. It can’t work as a mousetrap until all parts exist, in proper relation to the others, and made out of the proper materials and strengths.

If a biological system in the human body were shown to be ‘irreducibly complex’ – then Darwin’s own test would be met.

In Darwin’s day – we didn’t know enough about life to be able to refute evolution – but we are now at the point where examples of irreducibly complex systems have been found – and for which there is no evolutionary explanation possible. (Others may differ – but I’ve yet to see a reasonable argument made for examples that Behe has provided)

This has happened at the molecular biology level… Michael Behe has given a number of irreducibly complex biologic systems, and more are being discovered as research into this area continues.

Here’s just one example:

Coagulation Cascade

Perhaps some of you might recognize it – it’s the chain of events that happens when you get a cut – and your blood must coagulate to prevent all of your blood from running out of your body. (Thanks to Wikipedia for the diagram)

As Behe points out, “The formation, limitation, strengthening, and removal of a blood clot is an integrated biological system, and the problems with single components can cause the system to fail.” This is an irreducibly complex system – and Darwin’s evolutionary theory cannot explain it. You can’t form a blood clot – even a very poor one – by only half of the process outlined in the diagram… it’s all or nothing.

Now, keep in mind that this article is merely designed to provoke you into researching the topic yourself – even Behe goes into pages and pages of discussion on just this one example. He gives other examples of irreducibly complex biologic systems at the molecular level – and those who champion evolutionary theory are struggling to defend Darwin against these modern day arguments.

As Evolutionary biologist Professor Jerry Coyne admitted: “There is no doubt that many biochemical systems are dauntingly complex.” But don’t jump to any hasty conclusions, because “biologists are beginning to provide plausible scenarios for how irreducibly complex biochemical pathways might have evolved.” I’d tell the Professor that his words might be comforting if I didn’t already know that the basic problems that Darwin was facing still haven’t been resolved… such as the lack of transitional fossils.

When Michael Behe’s book, “Darwin’s Black Box” first came out in 1996, University of Chicago microbiologist James Shapiro asserted: “There are no detailed Darwinian accounts for the evolution of any fundamental biochemical or cellular system, only a variety of wishful speculations.” Behe asserts that in the 10 years since – nothing has changed. If those who champion Darwin’s Evolutionary theory are not even taking up the defense – should we?

It’s interesting that religion is actually at the base of the debate over Darwin’s Evolutionary theory – on both sides. People rarely realize it – but it was Darwin’s theory that gave Atheism a scientific foundation. So proponents on both sides are arguing on the basis of faith. One of the strongest proponents of Darwinian Evolution, Richard Dawkins, recently released a book by the title of “The God Delusion“. Atheism and Darwinism are firmly interconnected, and this is a fact that you will not be taught in school.

What does this probable refutation of Evolutionary Theory mean to the average person? I rather doubt if any of my readers are working in fields related to biology, paleontology, anthropology, or other such fields of work where this would make a difference. However, it may very well make a difference in how you relate to religion – so I posted this with the intent of demonstrating that people of intelligence can, based on facts, decide that the theory of Evolution does not represent provable fact.

Does this automatically mean that any other explanation of life is correct? Of course not! Each theory must be examined on its own. I’d like to suggest however, that going through life without examining the common things that people “simply know” is a poor way to live. After all, people once “knew” that the Earth was flat, that gravity would cause a heavier object to fall faster, and many other bits of knowledge that are rightfully consigned to the trash heap of historical garbage.

Might I suggest that Darwin’s Evolutionary theory might someday be in the same category?

Using WordPress as a CMS.

March 8, 2007 by khadaji Leave a Comment

CMS – it’s the buzz word of the modern day webmaster – simply meaning “Content Management System”.  What a CMS does – is separate the structure of a website from the content.

You want to create a website?  Tell everyone your opinion?  Pass along the latest family gossip to other family members?  Hype your business?  Have a marketing tool for your martial arts’ club?

In times past – you’d have to learn HTML coding, or have an Internet geek do the work for you. This can run into a nice sum of money – since a fully developed custom website can start at $1,000 or more.

But now, if you can learn simple things such as how to FTP – you can have a website up and running in less than a day.  The cost?  All you need is a web host – which you can get for as little as $3/mo or so… (I pay $4.95 for a webhost that allows unlimited domains…), and a domain name – which is currently costing less than $10/year.  The website software?  Totally free!

Just to give an example – head over to Holmes Mobile Screen, and take a look around.  I put that site together for my brother in just a couple of hours.  Now – to be honest – I already had the domain name, and I already had the content.  All I did was upload the ‘WordPress‘ software, set a few file permissions, set my ‘Mysql’ database, then just ‘cut & paste’ the content.  Also, to be honest, I’ve done several of these sites – so I have a wee bit of experience about what to do.

But even an absolute beginner could probably have a basic website up and running in just a few days… with the ease of locating answers to problems that Google allows – anyone can be an “instant expert” on website design!

Are there disadvantages to using WordPress?  Not really – at least in my opinion.  One of the huge advantages is the speed with which Internet search engines will index your site.  Since ‘blogging’ sites are generally time sensitive (the latest breaking news type of thing), search engines are very quick.  For example, when I click on “publish” for this article that I’m now typing – I will see Google & Yahoo at my site, indexing this article, within mere minutes!  WordPress software automatically ‘pings’ (or notifies) many search engines as soon as an article is posted.

Another huge advantage is when you need to update or add to your website.  Using WordPress – I simply ‘log-in’… and create new pages from the admin menu.  It’s incredibly easy!

Now, WordPress isn’t the only free blogging software – it’s one of the oldest, however; with a continuous record of being updated and improved.  And the community of WordPress users is so large that it’s going to be difficult to run across a problem that someone else has not already had and solved – which makes it easy to solve your own problems – someone else already has a webpage on how they solved the problem!  I did quite a bit of research before I settled on WordPress, and I’ve never regretted that decision.

So if you’ve ever wanted to put up your own website – the time has come, it’s easy to do nowadays – and your only excuse must be laziness!

General Intelligence… JFK & RFK Assassinations

February 23, 2007 by khadaji Leave a Comment

I’m often amused at the ability of some in the ‘elite media’ to presume that everyone in the general population are white trash rednecks who attend church every Sunday and discuss recent Elvis sightings the rest of the week.

The ‘disconnect’ between the traditional mass media and the average American is never so apparent as it is when the JFK or RFK assassination is mentioned. It goes without saying among the ‘intelligentsia’ that Lee Harvey Oswald and Sirhan Sirhan are lone assassins. Yet poll after poll places the belief that there were conspiracies involved as high as 90% of the American population. Are 9 out of 10 people simply stupid?

What’s truly fascinating is to see those who believe in the Warren Commission Report attempt to defend the theory that Oswald was the lone assassin… I invite anyone interested to go to the newsgroup – alt.conspiracy.jfk It can be accessed via Google Groups, or many other free news forum access points on the net.

Some might ask – what does this have to do with me? After all, it happened over 40 years ago. Yet the pervasiveness of the governmental cover-up is almost beyond belief, and if you’re interested in how our country is governed (as you should be), then an understanding of how the government operates is critical. You can’t fix what you don’t understand is broken.

Some of the rather interesting tidbits that have come out of the study into the JFK assassination is the fact that much of the traditional media is beholden to, and under at least some control of the CIA. Which only makes sense when you think about it – there are two functions of a spy agency – one is to discover the secrets of your opponent, but the other is to mislead others as to your own secrets. That the media has traditionally been in bed with intelligence agencies might prove to be a shock to those who thought that the news was unbiased.

Not too long ago, Gerald Posner, a journalist – wrote a book titled “Case Closed”, that purported to demonstrate that the evidence against Oswald was overwhelming, and that there was no need to further investigate the assassination – that indeed, the ‘case’ was ‘closed.’

However, the book Posner wrote was quickly dissected by JFK assassination researchers, who developed dozens of examples of where Posner misrepresented the evidence, or simply lied about what is known. Quite often, I ask the question, “When is a lie required to support the ‘truth’?” – and I never seem to find a reasonable answer to this rhetorical question.

Reclaiming History: The Assassination of President John F. KennedyThose who defend the “Lone Nut” hypothesis are excited that Vincent Bugliosi – famous for his prosecution of Charles Manson, is coming out with a book dedicated to the idea that the Warren Commission got it right. This will be a sad day for Bugliosi’s reputation, for it’s not possible to write a book defending the Warren Commission Report without misrepresentation of the evidence – or even outright lies about the evidence. I’ve made that prediction in the news forum, and I don’t have any fear that I’ll be forced to apologize to Vince Bugliosi. The release date of this book has been touted as far back as 1999, so it’s a complete mystery if it really will be released in May of 2007 as is now being asserted.
[Update: The book has been released, and as predicted, Bugliosi was forced to tell some whoppers to support his theory]

I’d like to point out a truly interesting historical dazzler here: It was Bugliosi who collected the eyewitness statements that proved that more than 8 shots were fired at RFK, and who cross-examined the firearms experts to prove that they couldn’t identify Sirhan Sirhan’s gun as the murder weapon, or discount more than one gun being fired that day… indeed, actually provided very persuasive evidence that Sirhan Sirhan never even fired a bullet that day! (That last will be a shocker to most people who only know what the traditional mass media will tell you…) Bugliosi argued conspiracy in a court case, and is now going to argue (admittedly, in the case of JFK rather than RFK) that there was no conspiracy. I’m sure there’s a good “Lawyer joke” that can be made out of this… Smiley

There have been a number of official inquiries into the JFK assassination – most famous were the Warren Commission, the Clark Panel, and the House Select Committee on Assassinations (HSCA). Interestingly, all three misrepresented or outright lied about the evidence that they had in front of them. This isn’t in serious dispute, yet no-one can answer why lies were needed to support the “truth.”

It’s interesting to note that there are two major newsgroups dedicated to the topic of the JFK assassination on the Internet (and dozens of lesser known ones):

Alt.Conspiracy.JFK – a wide open forum.
Alt.Assassination.JFK – a “moderated” (read, ‘Censored’) forum.

I’ve often been amused at the idea that those dedicated to the idea that Oswald was the lone assassin congregate in a censored group – where they don’t have to face those willing to point out their lies and misrepresentations of the evidence.

If you’d like to learn more about the evidence for a conspiracy that took the life of JFK, feel free to visit the two forums, and feel free to ask questions. History is something we should all be familiar with. But don’t take anyone’s opinion as fact – look at the primary evidence yourself – much of it is available on the Internet.

Kenka Yotsu in Uchikomi – Don’t Forget it!

February 17, 2007 by khadaji Leave a Comment

Those who’ve ever paid attention while I’m teaching a class know the emphasis I keep placing on being able to attack to the left side.  It’s a skill that is desperately needed the higher you go in competition.

Interestingly, George Weers did a study on grips – and mentions that while examining over 500 top level matches, the grip stances were split virtually 50/50.  Now, any knowledgeable person would never assert that lefties comprise 50% of the population – so perhaps my students might figure out that what I’m saying about learning to handle throws to the left side … just might be based on more than the wild rantings of a Judo old-timer…

This interesting stat that George Weers developed means that a very large percentage of matches fought at the higher levels of Judo are going to be Kenka Yotsu – or opposite grips.  (you take a right-handed grip, and your opponent takes a left handed grip)

Now, if you aren’t regularly practicing Kenka Yotsu in your uchikomi or randori – you’re going to be badly flustered the first time you encounter someone in shiai that doesn’t take the standard right hand grip.  I often attribute what success I’ve had in competition to the fact that I learned early on that few Judoka could handle left-handers… so I switched to being a ‘lefty’, despite being a complete right hander in everything else.

Kenka YotsuThe problem that is bound to come up is that in Kenka Yotsu, both you and your opponent have your ‘Power Hand’ on the same side.  In a right handed grip, your power hand is your right forearm – which will be, in many throws; placed squarely on uke’s chest.  But if your opponent also has his power arm on the same side – one person is going to ‘take the inside’.  Viewing the photo here, you’ll see that the Judoka on the right has the inside, and therefore could begin a throw.  The Judoka on the left would be unable to exert maximum force until –he- takes the inside on his lapel grip.

Taking the inside – this is critical, if you have the inside grip, your opponent cannot place his forearm on your chest, and has, as a result, a tremendously lesser ability to exert force on you.  The problem is the construction of the arm… if you exert force with your hand only – your elbow makes your arm act as a spring… you can’t put maximum force along your arm (unless you lock the elbow!) because your arm will flex at the elbow.  This is why in many throws, it’s critical to ’set the power arm’ by slamming your forearm against uke’s chest… there’s no ’spring action’ of the elbow to worry about.

So how do you ‘take the inside’ if both of you are in Kenka Yotsu?  One of you will already be on the inside – you should make every attempt to make sure that you are that person.  Or be capable of ‘taking the inside’ at a moments notice.

There are two basic ways to do it – you can drop your grip and circle your hand up under uke’s arm to retake the lapel grip … putting you on the inside.  Not recommended!  If someone drops a grip, I have no particular desire to make it easy for my opponent to regain it – also, if I have a two handed grip, and my opponent only has his locking arm grip – that’s the perfect opportunity for me to throw him.

The second, and to my way of thinking, best way to take the inside is more easily executed than described in words… looking at the photo above, imagine that you’re the Judoka on the left… you push with your left hand until both you and your uke are ’straight-armed’ from each other.  At that time, your power arm will be above and just slightly to the outside of uke’s power arm.  Simply twist your arm slightly, bringing your elbow to the inside… then drop your elbow – pushing uke to the outside.

Also, don’t fail to appreciate how your body movement can help you take the inside.  This is something that you need to spend some uchikomi time with… I recommend that you switch throws with your uke during uchikomi… first you ‘take the inside’ and execute your throwing attack… then your partner must now take the inside and execute his throwing attack… and so forth.

Combine this with a few attacks that you can execute from the left grip rather than the right – and you’ll have a surprise up your sleeve for the next shiai… good luck!

Uchikomi & Newaza – the Forgotten Combination

Most Judoka practice at least some Uchikomi during standup practice at every practice, but how many Judoka realize that Uchikomi is just as valuable on the mat?

When drilling a new pin variation, turnover, or guard entry – you should be doing it multiple times… and do it as AnnMarie De Mars – former World Champion, recommends: try to speed it up each time.  Make your goal to be as fast as you can with the given technique.

I have a favorite technique to attack a turtle with, it’s really a trap move – but I’ve drilled it so many times that when someone gives me the opening, it’s a foregone conclusion that they’ve lost to the armbar that results.  I’ve picked up a few Ippons during my long-past days of competition with this move – and it’s only because I’ve drilled, drilled, and drilled some more that it’s been so effective for me.  (No-one at the Encino Judo club would be puzzled by this comment – they know exactly what technique I’m referring to… I’ve done it a few times… Smiley )

So keep this in mind for your next practice session – when you go to the ground, practice uchikomi there as well as in your throwing practice. Your Judo will improve dramatically for the effort…

Redneck Hillbilly’s Home Care Hare Straitening Kit

Hair Straitening

I had a wee bit of fun this Christmas… according to my Sister-in-Law, my 20 year old niece wanted a “Hair Straightener” for Christmas.  Now, being a guy; I had absolutely no clue what a “hair straightener” was, and had to be ‘edumacated’.

Being somewhat mischievous The Devil Made Me Do It! from time to time, I decided to play a little prank on my niece – so I purchased a red construction brick, a rubber mallet, and a box of matches.

I looked around for an appropriate box, set some styrofoam in it, and with a razor I carefully cut out areas for the brick, mallet, and box of matches to sit in.

Then I sat down to the computer, and created a “manual” for my “Redneck Hillbilly’s Home Care Hare Straitening Kit”.  Then, as all manuals seem to be – I ran over to Google and translated the manual into French, German, and Japanese.  I spent some time learning how to print this out in a ‘booklet’ form, and created a very nice little manual.
(Click Here to View the Manual).

Of course, it wouldn’t be fair to give my niece just this ‘gift’, so naturally I really did purchase a nice hair straightener for her.  When I got to the store – I realized that I still hadn’t learned enough about hair straighteners… they had 1″ models, and 2″ models… so, being just a guy – I collared several women who were shopping nearby, and begged them to explain to me the difference.  Apparently, as near as I can figure it out, the difference in size is helpful depending on what you want to do with the hair straightener.  And here I thought the purpose of a hair straightener was to straighten hair!!  But I’m just a guy… Fortunately, as it turned out, the 2″ model I purchased was exactly what my niece wanted.  (or at least she convinced me of that…)

I really did have quite a bit of fun while creating this ‘gift’… as you might imagine – I got some shocked looks at the building construction supply store when I asked for a ’single red brick’.  One guy there had a good sense of humor and a fast tongue – he instantly replied that they had just ran out of red bricks.  Now, this construction supply store had about half a dozen men, and just one lady behind the counter. As I explained what I needed a single red brick for, the men all just smiled, but the one lady present sent daggers my way… I knew that I’d be in trouble if it weren’t for the counter that stood between us, so I quickly explained to her that of course I was also purchasing a real hair straightener for my niece.  One of the clerks went in the back to choose the perfect red brick for me, while another clerk rang me up for the .44 cents (plus tax) that they were soaking me for.  The mallet set me back $2.99, and the box of matches cost pocket change as well…

I must report honestly that she got quite a laugh out of her ‘gift’… even before she found out that she was also getting a real one.   So I certainly enjoyed my Christmas… How about you?
